Navratri Parshad-Halwa,Poori and Chana

Jai Mata Di, Halwa, Poori and Kala Chana is the typical parshad made on Ashtami/Navami day after praying to goddess Durga for 7/8 days. Navratri is the story of the fight between Durga and the demons and the eventual victory of good over evil when she slays the evil demon Mahisura.

It is celebrated in different ways all over India but the commonality of the worship of Shakti/power remains constant. Most people across North India, observe fast, where they give up grains, onions and garlic and eat mainly fruits, nuts, seeds and a few basic vegetables and dairy. This kind of food is called ‘Falhari’ derived from two Hindi words-‘Fal’ meaning fruit and ‘Aahar’ meaning consume/eat.

The victory of goddess Durga over the evil demon, is celebrated by making parshad and inviting kanjaks/young girls to the house, considered forms of Durga herself, and offering parshad to them.
