Plum Panna

A summer drink made of fresh plums, that’s sweet, salty and tart. You get a full serving of fruit while enjoying a delicious drink.

Inspired by Aam panna and Watermelon panna, its a great way to consume plums. If you suffer from constipation, but just don’t like the taste of prunes(which are nothing but dried plums), try this tasty summer drink for regularity. You can read more about the health benefits of plums in this article by Dr Axe.

if you are wondering why I have made Watermelon Panna and Plum panna but not Aam panna, it’s because I live in a small town where mangoes, specially raw mangoes are hard to come by. So when I feel like having a sweet, sour, tangy drink and mangoes are not available-I just use a summer fruit that is readily sold in all stores and satisfy my craving for this quintessential summer drink.

Plum Panna

Aanchal Gupta

A summer drink made of fresh plums, that’s sweet, salty and tart. You get a full serving of fruit while enjoying a delicious drink.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Servings 4 cups

Ingredients

  • 5 medium size plums
  • 1/3 cup sugar use more or less depending on the sweetness of the plums
  • 1 1/2 tsp kala namak/Black Salt
  • 1 tsp Bhuna Jeera/Roasted and ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp Lal Mirch/Red Chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp Kali Mirch powder/Black Pepper powder
  • 1/4 tp 1/2 tsp dry mint powder or a few sprigs of fresh mint
  • 1/2 to 1 lime/lemon juice depending on size
  • Fresh mint for garnish

Instructions

  • Wash and cut the plums in half
  • Put 1 cup water and pressure cook for 2 whistles
  • Let pressure release naturally and when cool enought to handle, remove skin and pit/seed
  • Add 2 cups water, sugar and all dry spices(if using fresh mint, add that as well) and pulse
  • Squeeze juice of lime/lemon and enjoy chilled over ice

Notes

You can pressure cook the plums or roast them on a grill till charred. It will give a nice smoky flavor. If pressure cooking is not an option, place plums in a pot, bring to a boil and cover and cook till done. I strained the plums right after cooking and cooling them and found them to be too pulpy to pass through a sieve. I recommend straining after pulsing/blending the plums but before adding the spices. Passing the juice through a sieve is completely optional. I also found I like the taste of fresh mint more than mint powder.
