Two Ingredient Dough Naan/Flatbread-No Yeast

Two Ingredient Dough Naan/Flatbread-No Yeast

Two Ingredient Dough Naan/Flatbread  requires only 2 ingredients-Greek yogurt and self rising flour!  Make soft, pillowy restaurant like naans in minutes at home with this Two Ingredient Dough Naan/Flatbread-No Yeast There is no yeast or egg in the dough and can be made instantly though letting the dough rest for 20-30 minutes gives better results.

I tried these naans in the oven as well. if making in the oven, Preheat oven to 425F. Put oil on foil and place the naans on the foil and bake for 7-9 minutes. Broil at 550F on the rack closest to the heating element. Keep moving the tray to avoid burning. I also tried in an air fryer but the naans kept turning over, so I would not recommend making in an air fryer. Of all the 3 methods I felt cooking on the open flame came closest to the naan made in a Tandoor/clay oven.

These Two Ingredient Dough Naans can be topped with fresh minced garlic, minced green chilies, fresh parsley ,finely chopped nuts or any topping of choice. I kept it traditional and simple with just nigellla seeds and cilantro.

Greek yogurt and self rising flour are the only two ingredients required to make these soft, pillowy restaurant like naans in minutes at home.

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Course Breakfast, Dinner, lunch, Main Course
Cuisine Asian, Indian

Servings 4 -5 Naans

Equipment

  • 1 mixing bowl
  • 1 Rolling Pin
  • 1 measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 pan/tava
  • 1 wire mesh

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Self Rising Flour Use Gluten Free Self Rising Flour for Gluten Free Naans
  • 3/4 cup Greek Yogurt I used Full Fat(Use vegan greek yogurt for vegan naans)

For Toppings

  • 1 tsp Nigella seeds/Kalonji
  • 1 tbsp chopped cilantro
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1-2 tsp Butter/ghee Omit for vegan naans

Instructions

  • In a bowl mix flour and yogurt and bring together into a ball
  • Sprinkle some flour onto a clean surface and knead the dough for 7-8 minutes till it becomes smooth. Use additional flour if needed,1 tbsp at a time
  • Cover and set the dough aside for 30 minutes
  • Divide the dough into 4/5 sections, depending on size of Naan preferred
  • Make the dough into smooth balls and roll in dry flour. Now use a rolling pin to roll them into Naans. I prefer oval shape.
  • Smear some water on the Naan and sprinkle some nigella seeds and chopped cilantro
  • Gently run the rolling pin to help the seeds and cilantro adhere to the naan
  • Heat a pan on medium and place the naan on the pan, nigella and cilantro side facing up
  • When the Naan starts to puff up and bubble, check the bottom of the naan, it should have golden specks and should be almost cooked
  • Place a wire mesh/Jaali on the direct flame and cook the Nigella/cilantro side on the direct flame to get the charred look
  • Top with butter or ghee

Notes

Its best to use a cast iron instead of non stick. Heat the pan on medium and once hot then put the naan on it. If the pan is too hot the bottom of the naan will burn. Cooking the top of the naan directly on the open flame gives it the charred look and flavor that we expect from traditional clay ovens. The Wire mesh/Jaali is readily available in Indian stores. You can also buy chicken coop wire from any home improvement store. Though the dough can be used immediately after kneading, resting it for 20-30 minutes gives better results. If making for a large gathering, cook the naans only on one side and set aside. Cook the other side on the flame when ready to serve.
To make Self Rising Flour at home- Mix 1 cup All Purpose Flour/Maida with 1 1/2 tsp baking powder and 1/4 tsp salt. make sure the baking powder is fresh for optimum results.
Works well with vegan greek yogurt and gluten free self risig flour.
