Bhatura from Pancake Mix/Bisquick Bhatura

Instant Bhatura with pancake mix requires only two ingredients, pancake mix and wholewheat flour. Unlike the traditional bhaturas, these don’t require any baking soda, baking powder, yeast, yogurt or club soda. These bhaturas don’t have to rest for hours for the dough to ferment, instead its as easy as make dough, rest for 15 minutes while the oil heats and enjoy your instant bhaturas!

Bhaturas made from maida/All Purpose flour are hard to roll and become stretchy and chewy once cold. These bhaturas are easy to roll, don’t soak up any oil, and stay fluffy and soft even after a few hours. These bhaturas don’t require any special skills to puff up while frying, these practically puff up on their own!

These bhaturas taste best with chana/chick peas or Rassedar Aloo/curried potatoes and Bangalore style Carrot Beetroot Raita. If you struggle to make your puris puff up then do read my post on Perfect Puffy Puris. One of the most popular type of puris on my blog is the Instant Bedmi Puri or Dal ki Puri which I make without soaking or grinding the dal! Palak ki Puri, Beet ki Puri and Shyam Savera Puris are some of the other types of puris to try out.

Moving on to the recipe, here is the written recipe followed by the step by step pictorial one-

Instant Bhatura with pancake mix requires only two ingredients, pancake mix and wholewheat flour. Unlike the traditional bhaturas, these don’t require any baking soda, baking powder, yeast, yogurt or club soda. Bhaturas made from maida are hard to roll and become stretchy and chewy once cold. These bhaturas are easy to roll, don’t soak up any oil, and stay fluffy and soft even after a few hours.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Servings 15 -16

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Pancake Mix I used Bisquick
  • 1 cup Whole wheat Flour/Atta
  • 3/4 tsp salt or as per taste
  • Water to make a dough I used a little less than 1 cup, depends on pancake mix brand and quality of WWf
  • oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a bowl, mix all flours and salt and gradually add the water and make a dough, like we do for rotis
  • Cover with a wet paper towel and set aside for 15 minutes
  • Meanwhile heat the oil in a pan/wok/karahi at the highest temperature(I used the sear option)
  • After 15 minutes, gluten should have formed. Smoothen dough and divide into 14-16 balls
  • Roll the ball with a rolling pin and fry in oil. Press gently to make sure it puffs up.
  • Flip and fry other side as well, till it turn light golden

Notes

Check to see if oil is hot enough by putting a tiny piece of dough, if it rises too quickly, oil is too hot, if it settles at the bottom and takes a long time to come up, the oil is too cold, if the dough goes down and comes up in a few seconds, its ready for frying.

Hi Veena, thanks for trying out my recipe and sharing your feedback. Glad to know they were yummy and you enjoyed them. Set dough aside for 15 minutes or roll thicker bhaturas, that might help in puffing them up.

Can we use bisquick buttermilk batter too or just the original bisquick??

Hi Richa, I haven’t tried with the buttermilk batter so can’t say but I think it should work. I always buy the original bisquick mix.
