Panchamrit/Charnamrit for Diwali/Janamashtmi/Shivratri Puja and Abhishek

Panchamrit is an offering made to gods during puja consisting of five ingredients- milk, yogurt, honey, sugar and ghee. After puja/abhishek the panchamrit is distributed as parshad to the devotees. Panchamrit is used during Diwali puja, Rudra Abhishek, Janamashtmi and Shivratri.

Panchamrit is a combination of two words-panch meaning five and amrit meaning nectar or elixir. It is also used interchangeably with the word Charnamrit which is also a combination of two words-charan meaning feet and amrit.

For Diwali puja, I make panchamrit in a shallow bowl and place two silver coins(wash them with soap and water first) of Lakshmi ji and Ganesh ji into the panchamrit. You can also use gold coins-it’s a matter of preference or what’s available. Chant-Om Gan Gan Patay Namah or Om Shri Ganeshay Namah  and Jai laxmi Mata while putting the coins into the panchamrit. You can also place a small gold or diamond ornament along with the coins. Put a few Tulsi leaves on top and leave in the mandir or puja room overnight. This is the last thing we do after Diwali puja and Arti are complete. Next morning, take out the coins in a shallow bowl. Pour some water and rinse well. Dry coins with a towel and do darshan of Laxmi ji and Ganesh ji. As the day after Diwali is considered the start of a new year, its auspicious to start the day with a darshan of Ganesh who ensures that there are no obstacles in the new year and Lakshmi who ensures a year full of prosperity and blessings. Distribute the rest of the panchamrit/ charnamrit to the family members. The water that was used for rinsing can be poured into a tulsi plant or on either side of the main entrance.

For Janamashtmi-the panchamrit is poured over an idol of baby Krishna at midnight when he is supposed to be born and the charnamrit is then distributed to all devotees.

For Shivratri and Rudra Abhishek-the panchamrit is poured over the shivling and the charnamrit is later distributed as parshad to all who are present there.

An offering made to gods during puja consisting of five ingredients milk, yogurt, honey, sugar and ghee. After puja/abhishek the panchamrit is distributed as parshad to the devotees. Used during Diwali puja, Rudra Abhishek, Janamashtmi and Shivratri.

Prep Time 2 minutes
Total Time 2 minutes

Servings 1 /2 cup

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup/125 ml Milk
  • 1 tsp yogurt/dahi/curd
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 2-3 drops of ghee
  • Optional-Tulsi leaves ganga jal,jaggery/nuts/saffron/chironji

Instructions

  • In a shallow bowl mix the five ingredients
  • Honey takes a few minutes to mix in and the ghee will float on top
  • Add any optional ingredients if you want,I don’t add anything except Tulsi leaves

Notes

This is the traditional recipe as made in my family. Ganga jal should be one of the five ingredients but since I live in the US and don’t have access to Ganga Jal, I use both sugar and honey to make up the five ingredients. If you have Ganga Jal put a spoonful of it. I just add a few drops of ghee as it floats on top(being lighter than milk). Adding nuts, saffron, chironji is optional.
