Healthy Farali Pattice in Appe Pan

Aanchal Gupta
A quick, easy and lowfat version of the Farali Pattice. Desiccated coconut replaces fresh coconut and instead of mincing fresh cilantro, mint, green chilies etc, I have used Green chatni that we usually have ready and handy at home.
Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

  • salt as per taste

for filling

  • 9 tbsp desiccated coconut/dry coconut powder
  • 4 tbsp Green chatni
  • 3 tbsp Roasted peanuts coarsely grounded
  • 1 tbsp minced ginger
  • 1 1/2 tsp green chili minced
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • salt as per taste about 1/2 tsp
  • 1/3 mashed potatoes

for frying

  • 1-2 tbsp Arrowroot flour for rolling the pattice/balls

for assembling the pattice/balls

  • Take two bowls, in one put arrowroot flour and in the other about 1 cup water(for dipping hands and smoothing the pattice/balls

  • Divide the filling into 18-20 balls, smaller in size than the potato balls
  • Wet your palm and place a ball on it. Use wet fingertips to flatten it into a disc
  • Place the filling in the middle and bring the potatoes together, enclosing the filling completely
  • Wet hands to make sure there are no cracks, should be completely smooth
  • Roll in Arrowroot flour

To fry in Appe pan

  • Heat appe pan on medium, once pan is heated, add few drops of oil in each cavity and let oil heat as well
  • Place the pattice/balls in each cavity and leave undisturbed for some time, till you think bottom is done
  • Flip the pattice and continue to brown evenly from all sides
  • Serve with Green chatni

Notes

The same pattice can be deep fried. To Fry- Make sure there is very little water content in potatoes. Its best to boil in microwave. Grating the boiled potatoes gives smooth, even, crackfree pattice. Place potatoes in fridge for 15-20 minutes to further dry out any water in them. Increase Arrowroot flour to 3 1/2 tbsp instead of 2 1/2 if deep frying. You can use fresh coconut and grind with fresh cilantro, green chilies and lemon juice if you dont want to use chatni. You can add chopped cashews and raisins as well to the filling.
