How to make Atte ka Diya for Mata ki Chowki/ Diwali Pujan/Karwa Chauth/Teej

posted in: How to | 8

Atte ka diya/lamp is a fun, economical, biodegradable and creative way to do puja. I have always seen mom make it for Karwachauth and for Ashtami puja. The idea to decorate with Sindoor and toothpick is totally hers. She was here last karwachauth and helped me make my Diya, though the way she makes, she does not bake it.  I prefer to bake it as it stays firm and is easier to decorate.

It’s also a great craft project to do with kids for Diwali. Let them mix the dough and have fun! We do let them play with Playdoh, so why not Atta! You could help them put the dough inside the steel bowl and let them spread it inside the mold. Once a Montessori teacher, always a Montessori teacher! I am always thinking of creative ways to involve children and what a fun way to teach finger dexterity and eye hand coordination.diyas-mata-19

You can get really creative with the decorating. I just used things that were available at home, Bindis and Sindoor. You can use paint, turmeric, chandan/sandalwood, rhinestones, glitter etc. If using paint, let the paint dry completely, then use glue to stick glitter and stones.diyas-mata-18

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 45 minutes
Total Time 50 minutes

Servings 3 -4 diyas depending upon size

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Atta/wholewheat
  • 1/2 cup water approximately

Instructions

  • Knead Atta with water, just like you would for Rotis, not too hard or soft.
  • Cover and let it rest for 20 minutes.
  • Use your hands to give shape. If you need to, use a bowl to help.
  • Grease the steel bowl on the inside, put atta and spread it allover evenly.
  • Put parchment paper on baking tray or just grease a baking tray.
  • Bake at 175F ( or the lowest setting on your oven for 45 minutes.
  • If you are using a steel bowl or any mold, take out now.
  • Bake an additional 15 minutes.
  • let it cool.
  • Decorate with Sindoor, bindis, paint, glitter etc.

Notes

I mixed Sindoor with water and used my finger to decorate the edges. I used a toothpick to draw the Swastik.
I made three large Diyas out of 1 cup Atta/wholewheat.
Be careful, not to make the atta too soft, add a little water at a time.
